Cinderella is dead

Her shoes were worn out
the bright red turned black
her broken hairband
pinned back with a tack

Her glimmer was dull
mascara smudged her face
her color had muted
as she walked in a solemn pace

Her smile turned down
cheeks powdered in ashes
darkened with charcoal
her face was wet from crying lashes

Her dress torn at the sleeve
dirt lined the hem
her ribbon around her waist loosened
dangling from her neck was a cracked gem

Her prince had left that night
and kept the shoe she left behind
so she limped on one heel
through the dingy attic which had her confined

Her eyes pinned shut
as she crossed her heart
wishing for her fairy godmother
to give her another start

Cinderella is dead
because no one rescued her
her sadness came through a hum
and all that was left in her heart was a skewer

She's not here, she's dead
